After leaving school in 1984, I had various jobs in different fields of industry - none remotely associated with art, design or sculpture. During the mid 90s I was fabricating livestock handling equipment, fortunately as it turned out, next door to a well known Wagga artist, the late Michael Murphy. Amazed by Michael’s ability to transform steel into life, I was irresistibly drawn to creative metal work. Years after completing formal studies in the craft, I was fortunate enough to work in United Kingdom for a year with internationally renowned Artist Blacksmith, Brian Russell. Brian and I collaborated on sculptural and architectural pieces, including a number of public art pieces.
Having grown up on my parents’ grazing property, I continue to live and work in a country setting with my wife, Natalie, and our two daughters, Amelia and Georgie. My influences and inspirations draw heavily on rural and regional environments of Australia.
I enjoy observing the way we, as Australians, live and behave: easy going, not too serious and with a little bit of larrikin in us all. Then there’s our passion, which is readily seen in our fanatical love of sport.
As an artist/ and craftsman, the quest for the level of technical mastery that brings creative freedom is ever present. My experience with Brian Russell in the UK was invaluable, and I continue to build on my technique with every creation.
